If you have multiple missing teeth adjacent to one another a dental bridge may be a restorative option for you. Gaps left by missing teeth can eventually cause teeth to rotate into the empty spaces, which can result in a bad bite. It can also lead to gum disease and future temporomandibular joint disorders.

Dental Bridges, along with dental crowns are fixed prosthetic devices (unlike dentures, which are removable devices) and are used to replace one or more missing teeth. Bridges are cemented onto existing teeth or implants, which act as anchors for the bridge. As with crowns, you have a choice of material and this can be discussed with your dentist. The bridge can be matched to the colour of the rest of your teeth so that the appearance is natural and cosmetically appealing, not to mention functional. Similarly, as with crowns, bridges can be used when:

  • Too much decay has weakened a tooth or teeth
  • A tooth or teeth is/are severely discoloured
  • A tooth/teeth are fractured or damaged
  • A tooth/teeth are misshapen
  • The major difference is that a dental bridge can replace a missing tooth using other teeth as anchors

After visiting 7 Pearls Dental Newcastle, your Dentist will examine your teeth. If a bridge is deemed a suitable option, and in accordance with your own preferences they will prepare your teeth so a bridge will fit over it.

After this, your Dentist will take an impression to provide an exact mold for the bridge and send this to our trusted Lab. This can take one to two weeks to prepare. Until this time a temporary bridge will be placed to cover the prepared teeth. This temporary will act as an aesthetic and semi-functional provisional until the custom-made bridge is finished.

Once it is ready you will be asked to return for a second visit at which time the fit and appearance of the bridge will be tried in. If suitable to you and your Dentist it will be permanently cemented over the prepared teeth.

What happens after?

This is the most important part- the after care. Once your bridge is fitted, it is important to maintain regular and effective regime of oral hygiene. This includes brushing and flossing two to three times a day. Flossing under the bridge will be especially important to prevent any decay or gum disease to the surrounding teeth. Avoiding foods such as toffees, lollies and minties are a must. Avoid using your teeth inappropriately- such as when chewing pens, crunching ice, chewing/biting fingernails etc.

How long does a dental bridge last?

There are a number of conditions that determine how long dental bridges can last. One of which is the type of bridge, but more importantly are your individual factors. Upon speaking to your dentist, you will get a better understanding and idea as to how long crowns can last. Many crowns can last 10 years or more. But this is dependent on maintaining a regular hygiene habit. Flossing and brushing at home as well as a routine professional clean on a regular basis to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
