Dental Crowns are a common type of indirect restoration of the tooth that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth. It is sometimes referred to as a "cap". Its appearance is that of your other teeth and therefore provides strong functional restoration as well as being cosmetically pleasing. Crowns are often used to strengthen your natural tooth.

There are many reasons why you may want a crown:

  • To improve the appearance of a discoloured filling (cosmetic)
  • You may have had a root canal and need a crown to protect what is left of your tooth.
  • To help hold a denture in place.
  • To improve the appearance, functionality and protect a cracked or heavily decayed tooth.
  • To restore implants that are used to replace a missing tooth.

Dental Crowns can be made of a variety of different materials. The material chosen will be dependent upon your specific case and will be discussed with you during your visit. For example, when you have crowns that are made out of porcelain or ceramic, your dentist will match the colour and texture to your natural teeth. In certain situations, crowns can be made out of metal alloys, some of which can have porcelain bonded onto it in order to give it a natural look.

Why can’t my tooth just have a filling?

Fillings are only appropriate if there is enough healthy enamel on the tooth to support the filling during normal use. If there are large fractures or areas of decay that compromise a significant portion of the tooth, it is best to then preserve that tooth by covering it with a crown to prevent more damage.

How long do dental crowns last?

There are a number of conditions that determine how long crowns can last. One of which is the type of crown, but more importantly are your individual factors. Upon speaking to your dentist, you will get a better understanding and idea as to how long crowns can last.  Many crowns can last 10 years or more. But this is dependent on maintaining a regular hygiene habit. Flossing and brushing at home as well as a routine professional clean on a regular basis to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

Here at 7 Pearls Dental Newcastle, after conducting a thorough examination and discussing the pros and cons of restoration with a crown we will prepare the affected tooth for the crown. We will then take an impression of the prepared tooth and send it to our trusted laboratory to create a crown as close as match to your natural teeth as possible. This can sometimes take several weeks to ensure that the crown we receive will match your tooth in both aesthetics, but also in fit from the preparation to prevent any ongoing issues. In between visits, you will have a temporary (provisional) crown placed that will aim to match the existing aesthetics and function of your natural teeth.

How is it fitted and how long will it take?

Once we have the crown back from the Lab, we will remove the existing temporary crown and the new custom-made crown is tied in to assess and confirm with you that you are happy with the fit and appearance. The crown is then fixed in place with special dental cement or adhesive.

The process usually requires two visits with your Dentist up to two weeks apart.
