Routine Examination, General and Preventive Dental Care

Preventative Dentistry focuses on the monitoring and maintenance of the whole mouth. Regular, comprehensive examinations of the teeth, bone, gums and tissues (such as tongue and cheeks) are vital for long-term health. During your examination, your Dentist will provide a professional clean as well as inspect your teeth and gums for signs of cavities and gum disease. We will also provide tailored advice on how to care for your mouth on a daily basis.

Your dentist may also discuss things such as diet, lifestyle factors and oral hygiene habits. Brushing and flossing technique is reviewed and modified according to your needs and preferences. Other topics that may be discussed are any possible cosmetic concerns or improvements you would like to make to your teeth.

What to expect

During your dental exam, your dentist will:
- Evaluate your overall health and oral hygiene
- Check your bite and jaw function and relation
- Evaluate your risk of tooth decay, and gum or bone disease
- Evaluate your need for tooth restoration or tooth replacement
- Remove any stains or deposits on your teeth
- Demonstrate the proper cleaning techniques for your teeth or dentures
- Assess your need for fluoride, and
- If necessary, take x-rays

Here at 7 Pearls Dental Newcastle, as part of your regular oral health examination, we will also conduct a thorough oral cancer screen and make sure nothing is missed.

Mouth guards

In Australia, there is a passion for sport, be it footy, netball, basket ball, or hockey. However, as fun as these sports are, when there's an accident, there is a risk of damage to the face and teeth. To minimise the risk, it is always a good idea to wear a mouth guard.

What is a mouth guard?

A mouth guard is a thick, shock-absorbent shield that fits over your teeth. Mouth guards are generally worn during sports where there is a risk of injury to the face and/or teeth.

How common are injuries while playing sport?

According to the Australian Dental Association (ADA), roughly one third of traumatic injuries to teeth are sports related. Sports Medicine Association Australia suggest that up to 50% of children experience some form of dental injury.

These risks, can be reduced by wearing a custom made mouth guard every time you play or train.

What is the best mouth guard to get?

There are two types of mouth guard options available:

Dentist Mouth guard Newcastle

- Custom fitted: A customised mouth guard provides you with the best fit and support for your teeth and is constructed by a dental professional who takes a dental impression. The mouth guard cushions teeth to protect them against impact.  It is designed to fit snugly, distribute any impact felt and will allow you to talk while on the field.

- Boil & Bite: These mouth guards are commonly found in pharmacies.  The mouth guards are softened in hot water and moulded over teeth and gums by biting into them.  They are often ill-fitting and uncomfortable.  Talking is also more difficult.  If you urgently need a mouth guard however, a boil and bite mouth guard is better than no mouth guard at all.
