Dental Veneers are a safe, effective and typically affordable way to change the appearance the front surface of your teeth.  They can correct misalignment, discolouration, chips or cracks, and can also be used to reduce gaps between teeth.

There are two types of veneers: porcelain and composite resin.

Porcelain veneers, like crowns and bridges are indirectly made. They are wafer thin, custom made shells that are made to match the colour and shape of your teeth perfectly. As they mimic natural enamel it results in a beautiful and natural looking smile.

Composite resin veneers are applied incrementally one layer at a time in the dental chair, sculpted by the dentist until the final result has been achieved.

What is the process for a dental veneer?

A small amount of tooth preparation is required (only sometimes) to ensure there is adequate space for the veneer.

For porcelain veneers, a mold is then taken and sent to the lab with the correct/ideal shade. In the interim, a temporary may be placed to protect any preparation that may have taken place. It may take two weeks from the time of preparing your tooth and selecting the veneers to obtaining the veneers. Once we have obtained the veneers we will check them thoroughly to ensure they are a precise fit with your existing teeth. Once you are happy, we will bond them permanently to your tooth or teeth and your smile makeover is complete!

For composite resin veneers, these are placed directly by hand by your dentist in small increments to ensure that the correct, natural look is given in chair.

Can I get veneers?

Most people are suitable candidates for dental veneers, however, it needs to be noted that this is a cosmetic treatment, not an orthodontic solution (in some cases). They will not correct very misaligned teeth, overbites and underbites.

Dental veneers also need healthy teeth and enamel on which to attach, if there is any decay or gum disease, it must be treated as a priority prior to the attachment of veneers.

If there is any evidence of teeth grinding (bruxism) or clenching, veneers are not a suitable option.  This is because persistent grinding can cause the veneers to chip, break, fracture or even debond (detach) completely from the tooth.

At 7 Pearls Dental Newcastle your Dentist will work with you to understand your own smile and to give you a smile you have always desired. We will discuss in detail the options available to you and once you are happy with our treatment goals and results we will commence the preparation for your smile makeover.

What are the major differences between porcelain and composite resin?

Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Porcelain dental veneers are very durable and look exceptionally natural and are quite resistant to staining. However, if they do crack or chip, the entire veneer must be replaced.  Porcelain veneers need to be made in a dental lab and require a few weeks to complete.

This contrasts to composite resin veneers, where it can be added to your existing teeth in one visit.  Any chips or cracks to composite can be repaired and are generally cheaper than porcelain, however, may not gain the same level of aesthetics.

How long do dental veneers last?

On average, veneers will last quite a long time, some studies report roughly 10 years, possibly more.  But the key important factor is that you must maintain a consistent and effective oral hygiene regime. A professional check up and clean must be scheduled at least twice a year. Most importantly, your teeth are not meant to chew pens, crush ice or rip open plastic bags, only use your teeth for eating food!
